There are many issues that can lead to a damaged database:
• Opening and saving the .mdb file in another program: If you open and save an .mdb file in another program there's no way to recover that database file.
• Interrupted write operation: This happens when Access shuts down without quitting properly.
• Mismatched Versions of the Jet Database Engine: Different versions of the Jet Database Engine write the database files differently and can cause damage to that database.
• Hardware failures: The cause for this issue can be failures in one link in the hardware chain between the computer that hosts the database and the computer that open that database.
Some of this issues can be avoided if we are careful when working with Access: always quit the program properly, don't open it with other programs (if you do it by mistake, don't save it), try to keep your database file as small as possible (Access brings a built-in compact tool), always have a backup and avoid multi-user access.
Sometimes it doesn't really depend on us, like when we experience hardware problems or when the power goes out. It just takes a few moments and we have a corrupt database.
There are some situations when Access may not detect that a database file is damaged. If an Access mdb file presents an strange behavior there are some guidelines to follow.
The first thing to do is to diagnose the problem. Here are some database corruption symptoms:
* Access asks for a password when none is set
* The file doesn't load even tough you clicked on the database file several times
* Error messages show up constantly
The most common error messages for Access corruption are:
-"Unrecognized database format"
-" Microsoft Jet Engine can't open the file."
-"This Microsoft Access has encountered a problem and needs to close."
-"Could not find field 'FieldName'"
-“The database needs to be repaired or it’s not a Microsoft Access file”
